Did you know that almost half the Dutch working population is unaware of its labour rights? For instance what minimum wage is and their right to a number of vacation days. This can lead to unjust and unlawful situations. Sterk op je werk is a new and unique project on entrepreneurship for MBO, HBO and WO law students.

What does the project involve?

Teams of MBO, HBO and WO law students are working on a legal solution to the problem that employees, such as yourself, are often insufficiently aware of their rights in the workplace and how they can defend them. The solution can be anything: a (tech) tool, a service or a service, in the form of a foundation or a company. Anything is possible.

Sterk op je werk kicked off this week with a group of students from the ROC Midden-Nederland, ROC Amsterdam, Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Hogeschool Utrecht and the University of Amsterdam. The education takes place at ROC Midden-Nederland (Kanaleneiland, Utrecht). The program pilot will complete at the end of January 2025 and if successful, a second pilot will also take place that year.

This pilot is experimenting with a multilevel collaboration, something that can also benefit all types of teachers in the future. The lessons are taught by our teaching team who specialise in Design Thinking (a proven successful methodology) and students are actively guided during the process. The course will conclude in January 2025 with an event where students from each working group can pitch their idea to a prominent jury.

A successful kick-off

Working groups have been created of 5 enthusiastic students each who will throw themselves into a legal solution to the problem that employees are often insufficiently aware of their rights in the workplace and how they can defend them. For each working group, there are two MBO students who are in charge of the working group, one HBO student and one WO student.

Together with researcher and professor Agnes Akkerman, project leaders Susan Leclercq and Frances Singleton are very enthusiastic about the motivation and energy, which is immediately palpable from the start.

A new dynamic for collaboration

Susan: "There is a lot of positive energy to work together in multilevel teams, and of course the wonderful teachers and colleagues of the ROC Midden Nederland and the Hogeschool Utrecht are a great motivator."

Frances: "This dynamic for collaboration within groups is a completely new experience, for the students and for the teachers alike. But we notice that there is a lot that binds students together, and working together on a legal solution to such a major social problem also gives a boost, of course."
