A project introducing primary school students to the field of law.

In a society governed by laws, it is essential to be aware of your rights and obligations, enabling you to advocate for your rights and understand that certain behaviors come with consequences. This requires legal awareness, which needs to be developed at a young age, but has received limited attention in Dutch primary education so far. Recht in de klas is a collaboration between law students from the University of Amsterdam and teachers' college for primary education to educate primary school students on these matters. In this project, we work together with Judith Hoefnagel (MetRechtInvesteren) and Marcelle Reneman (UvA).

Goal

Goals of Recht in de klas are:

  • Increasing legal awareness among all primary school students in Amsterdam (grades 6 through 8).
  • Providing students (from the Amsterdam Law School and the teachers' college) with experience in conveying (legal) knowledge.

Activities

  • Further development of the Recht in de klas curriculum.
  • Training law students from the Amsterdam Law School in teaching skills.
  • Instructing teachers' college students on the functioning of the rule of law.
  • Establishing collaborations with overarching school boards, organizations, and primary schools.

Impact numbers

We are currently in the preparatory phase.
