Despite labor laws and agreements, employees make insufficient use of legal options to enforce labor rights. This can lead to unjust and unlawful situations such as underpayment, discrimination, and unsafe working conditions. Learn more about our project 'Sterk op je werk,' which addresses these issues.

Certain groups such as women, ethnic minorities, those with practical training, and atypical workers (such as freelancers) are less well-informed about their rights. Sterk op je werk is a project in collaboration with MBO, HBO, and WO to enable students to develop practical solutions to strengthen their legal position.

By increasing awareness of labor rights within their group and thereby better protecting their own rights in the workplace. With guidance from the Amsterdam Law Hub, these MBO students lead teams of HBO and WO students to develop products or services to address this issue. The best ideas are then supported for a year in our Incubator programme.

Goals

The goals of Sterk op je werk are:

  • Contribute to solutions for a social problem, namely: access to employment law by practically educated workers.
  • Innovate Dutch law education: bottom-up and multilevel (MBO-HBO-WO where MBO takes the lead).
  • Using scientific research for legal solutions to social issues.

Activities

  • Establishing collaboration between MBO, HBO, and WO: in Amsterdam, we collaborate with ROC van Amsterdam and Hogeschool van Amsterdam. In Utrecht, we partner with ROC Midden-Nederland and Hogeschool Utrecht. In Groningen, we collaborate with WIJS (a partnership between Alfa College, Hanzehogeschool, and the University of Groningen).
  • Teaching students about labor law.
  • Guiding students in the Design Thinking process.
  • Supporting winning teams from the Incubator programme.

Impact numbers

We are in the preparatory phase of establishing collaborations and fundraising. The intended outcomes:

  • New, meaningful initiatives for our Incubator programme.
  • New legal education method connecting three types of higher education (MBO, HBO, and WO) in three cities (Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Groningen).
