Are you a (Dutch speaking) bachelor law student and interested in combining your studies with social work? Or are you currently working in a legal aid clinic? Then read more below about the programme and requirements to participate in the Legal Aid Clinic with which you can gain 6 credits.

Since academic year 2021/2022, it is possible to participate in this Dutch bachelor's course that you can take in both year 2 and 3. This means you will attend lectures on professional ethics and professional identity, dealing with clients from a cultural, gender and psychological perspective, and professional skills, such as legal writing and giving feedback, among others.

Requirements for credits

Working in one of the law schools is part of the Amsterdam Law Practice's experiential education. Read below which requirements we apply:

  • As a UvA law student, you have been hired as an employee at a legal aid centre.
  • You work at least 140 hours in a legal aid centre.
  • You take the Dutch course Clinic Legal Aid. This course lasts 7 weeks and starts in October or March. 
  • You write a portfolio based on the cases you work on during law clinic work.
  • You write a reflection report based on the experience you have gained in the law clinic. After successful participation, this will appear on your diploma with the grade you obtained.

Legal Aid Clinics 

Legal Aid Clinics specialise in different areas of law, including tax law and criminal law. Some centres have consulting hours on the Roeterseiland campus, others elsewhere in the city. As a student, the centres give you a unique opportunity to apply your knowledge in practice while contributing to the accessibility of law.
