Innovation in law; that is what we at the Amsterdam Law Hub stand for and that is why we like to talk about it in our podcast series with innovators from inside and outside the legal sector. For our latest two-part series (in Dutch), we delved into a subject that concerns us all: the war in Ukraine.

The 'fear' of cyberwar

News channels have been reporting on it for years, the potential cyberwar from Russia that might affect 'us' - the West. Since the conflict with Ukraine, these threats seem closer than ever. That is why Gabriela talks to none other than Paul Ducheine (Professor of Cyber Warfare at the UvA). With his decades of experience in this field, he gives us insights into the gravity of the situation and the role of technology today. Together, we will find out whether the threats are more realistic than ever this time.

S5E1 Oorlog in Oekraïne - Het parallelle conflict in cyberspace

Who will stand by you if there are no lawyers?

The fact that it is not always easy for lawyers to practise their profession is evidenced by the existence of the organisation Lawyers for Lawyers. Worldwide, they support lawyers who have been silenced for whatever reason. Since the conflict, lawyers from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus have a harder time than ever. What happens to all the imprisoned protesters who do not agree with the Russian regime, when there are no lawyers to assist them legally? Sophie de Graaf (Executive Director) and Leroy Niekoop (former programme officer) speak to us.

S5E2 Oorlog in Oekraïne - Hoe verhouden advocaten zich tot hun professie in tijden van oorlog?

In order to approach the subject from multiple perspectives, Gabriela called afterwards with Dean and Professor of Public International Law, André Nollkaemper. His findings on the subject can be heard at the end of both episodes.
